“Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?” In those words the Lord revealed that His ascent into heaven was not an abandonment but a change of presence. His earthly presence is the church, His new flesh is the believers.
This is both a priviledge and a responsibility. The gospel of John emphasizes the fact that Jesus’ leaving the disciples to go to the Father should be a reason for joy.
The reasons for this joy is that, from now on, the church is the sacrament of Jesus Christ who is the sacrament of the Father. The mystery of the Incarnation is not a transitional episode but a perpetual presence because it expresses perpetual fidelity. God cannot love and retreat His love. He cannot abandon His cause and leave us as “orphans”, hence, He gives us His Advocate, His Spirit. This is why the descent of the Holy Spirit and the Ascension are intimately linked.
